OUR PROJECTS / Incident Support Team

We all hope that a major incident (flooding, terrorist attack, plane crash etc.) does not occur in the Kingston area, but if one does occur then KVC has a role to provide an Incident Support Team to give additional support to the Royal Borough of Kingston (RBK) in helping those affected.

Time Required:
Whilst most volunteer activities are for a few hours every week the IST only meets for a couple of hours every 2-3 months but with the to commitment to be available at short notice for 6-8 hours, in a serious case this could possibly be for several consecutive days or nights. (This would be very rarely-or hopefully never).

Likely roles:
• Support in Rest Centres for “evacuees”
• Helpline support, to receive calls and provide basic advice and information from a brief.
• Other basic practical support such as escorting people to a designated Rest Centre

Call Out:
In almost all Major Incidents the first to attend will be the “Blue Light” services (Police, Fire Brigade etc) and once the immediate impact is dealt with then RBK will start up appropriate assistance e.g. Rest Centres. The IST is likely to be called on where the extent of this is greater than available staff can support, or more likely where the support has to be provided over a number of days.

Therefore whilst it is possible that the IST could be all called out at short notice it is far more likely that individuals would be contacted and asked to attend several hours or days later.

Training:
We (KVC and RBK) provide relevant training and quarterly workshops covering recent developments and briefings on what's happening locally and nationally.

We provide relevant insurance cover. As the IST will deal with people of all ages in a vulnerable situation we also carry out a criminal record check for volunteers (unless they have recently had this for their other volunteer activities).

Quarterly Training:
For details about our training, please call Douglas on: 020 8255 8685 or email him at: ist@kvc.org.uk
