‘Good Sports Project' - Sports volunteering

Following a successful funding bid in partnership with Kingston Council (Active Kingston Team) and Fulham F C Community Sports Trust, Kingston Volunteer Centre appointed in December 2008 a Good Sports Project Co-ordinator, Hedley Featherstone to specifically help sports clubs recruit and involve volunteers in sport and physical activities.

Kingston Volunteer Centre (KVC) provides support across the borough for individual volunteers and volunteering involving organisations.

What's in it for you?

Sports volunteering is open to everyone. You do not need previous volunteering experience which makes volunteering more attractive as it can and does bring many benefits including:

  • Fun
  • New friendships
  • New skills
  • Making a positive difference
  • Enhance your CV
  • Access to to experience which could lead to career opportunities.

Sports clubs across the Royal Borough of Kingston are in most cases run entirely by the members on a voluntary basis with many clubs always looking for more people to get involved.

Volunteers are needed at club level to fulfil a variety of roles and tasks. The amount of time needed can vary. Clubs understand how precious your time is and will look to make sure your time is used effectively and in a way that suits you.

For more information about how you can get involved in sports volunteering contact Hedley Featherstone, Good Sports Project 0208 255 8685 or email goodsports@kvc.org.uk .

Is your sports club looking for Volunteers?

KVC in conjunction with the National Volunteer Database is able to provide sports clubs with the opportunity, free of charge, to advertise their volunteer vacancies to over 130,000 people on the National Volunteer Database. The website and KVC attracts interest from many people in Kingston that are actively seeking sports volunteer opportunities.

Hedley would be delighted to hear from any club who would like to know more about the Good Sports project or is looking to advertise volunteering vacancies.

Volunteer Framework for Action

This plan provides a framework for sports volunteer development in the Borough from January 2009 to December 2010.

The aim is to have more volunteers, to ensure all volunteers have the opportunity to develop new skills or discover new talents and to enjoy their volunteering experience.

This will be achieved through the Framework which has six clear aims:

  1. Increasing the number of people taking up sports volunteering
  2. Developing an active programme of volunteer recruitment and retention
  3. Supporting volunteers throughout their service to sport in the borough
  4. Encouraging those who demonstrate or develop appropriate skills and competencies to assume key volunteer roles, including volunteer support and advocacy
  5. Recognising those who regularly volunteer their time and energy and on whom sports clubs in the borough depend.
  6. Developing strategies that engage with employers in the Borough on the benefits relevance and value of sports volunteering; this work aimed at achieving greater support and recognition for volunteering from employers.
